Thank you so much for writing this Alisa and clearing up the ignorance. I'm so honored that I actually got to meet Dolores during the horrible SB1070 times in Arizona. She's one of my heroes. Si se puede for everyone!

Esto esto esto. I’ve been clamoring, look not to your elected officials as “leaders” but rather organic leaders that rise from the ranks of the oppressed & disenfranchised. While I agree & love AOCs & Bernie’s momentum in an otherwise stagnant environment of pearl clutching statements of concern, I don’t believe either of the two will dip their toes into the “good trouble” we need from leadership at this time. I hope I’m wrong & hope to see them cuffed, detained or arrested at a protest—as result to their good trouble. Only those willing to do so, to the detriment of their lofty political positions, will prove to be real leaders of the opposition & resistance.

And should this current chaos devolve into violence, who will fill the role of guerrilla leader?Surly not Bernie or AOC. It’s not in their wheelhouse.

A great tribute to Cesar Chavez. I still remember my mom boycotting California fruit when the UFW went on strike in the...it had to be the 1960s.

And it was in San Antonio where I grew up. I'm glad some in my home town remember who he really was.

Oh my god, Alisa. The mental image of Dolores body slamming Schumer gives me chills ‘n thrills. I was a junior at UT Austin in September 1966 when César Chávez’ march from the Valley reached the state capitol. They marched up Congress Ave shouting “Viva la Huelga” and scores of radical students like me met them on the steps. It was a glorious and unforgettable day, especially coming just one month after the Tower shooting which left all of us traumatized. To step out of that dark place of despair (many of us lost friends that day) into the bright light of justice and courage renewed us. I’ve never seen a braver man or woman than César and Dolores. 💪🏽🇲🇽

Thanks for another great piece. This story of the rich using identity politics to divide us and distract us from the outright theft they're committing cannot be told enough. And I love the way you tell it!
